Does UCI have a math placement test? ›

Calculus Placement Test. If you have SAT, ACT, and/or AP scores, send your test results to UCI Admissions right away to place into Math courses without taking the ALEKS Calculus assessment.

Is a placement test hard? Placement tests aren't necessarily hard. These exams primarily cover the Algebra that you learned in high school, so whether or not they are hard depends on how well you did in Algebra.

A score of 30 or higher reflects that a student is adequately prepared for college-level mathematics. Higher level scores representative an adequate preparedness for higher level courses.

Look over as many topics as you can before the test.

Most math placement tests will give you credit for proving that you understand most of each topic. Study a wide range of what you have learned in the past: algebra, statistics, geometry, and calculus are all fair game when it comes to a math placement test.

You can't fail a placement test for college. If you receive a low score, you'll be placed in developmental classes for that subject to help increase your knowledge of the topic before you advance to more rigorous courses.

You should be spending about 12 hours a week studying calculus; that's 2 hours a day, 6 days a week. If you need to make adjustments in your academic or work schedules, do so now. How to study: Calculus texts are odd books. They are not meant to be read like a novel, or even like a history or biology text.

Don't wait to study until just before a test. Begin studying for tests on the first day of class by keeping up with assignments and readings, attending class and taking notes, and using available help regularly. Memorize theorems, rules and formulas as they appear in the course, and test yourself on them.

You can't fail a placement exam, but the results may determine you are not ready to take college-level classes right away. If that happens, don't panic! Some schools offer a re-take; if you want to try again, give it a shot.

In most colleges, ALEKS scores of 30 or higher show enough preparation for college-level mathematics. However, if you want to be at the highest level in math courses and save time and tuition, a score of 75 or higher is required.

Tips for the ALEKS assessment

Scores are not percentages. They are converted into benchmarks to place students into an appropriate math class based on their skill level, so don't panic if you see a score of 35, which is our average.

Your placement result (overall score) is a number between 0 and 100. It represents the percentage of topics that you have mastered within ALEKS. *Students who score below 30% or place below MATH 100, will be are encouraged to enroll in MATH 101.

You will have 90 minutes to complete the math placement. Once you begin, a timer will appear in the corner of your screen. The timer will not stop for any reason. If you do not submit your math placement within the time limit, your math placement will not be graded.

The MDT is only a placement test. Scores from the MDT do not grant additional credit or remove credit that is already awarded by UCLA Admission.
