Star Wars just introduced a major Star Wars: The Last Jedi retcon that has some interesting implications for one of the most anticipated upcoming Star Wars movies. It's been a bit difficult to pin down which Star Wars projects are really happening over the last few years, but Kathleen Kennedy's Star Wars movies update provided considerably more insight. Among the movies confirmed to be in the works is James Mangold's prequel movie, rumored to be titled Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi.
Little is known about Dawn of the Jedi currently, although, as the rumored title suggests, it is thought to be an origin story for the Jedi. Specifically, Dawn of the Jedi is set to explore the Prime Jedi—the very first Jedi in Star Wars. That is a truly thrilling prospect, but, based on this brand-new Star Wars retcon to The Last Jedi, that story might look quite different from what audiences are expecting.
Star Wars Is Introducing Some Subtle Wriggle-Room For Jedi History
Canon Established In The Last Jedi In Primed To Change
The Last Jedi established that Ahch-To, the island on which Luke Skywalker had exiled himself, was the location of the very first Jedi Temple. However, a brand-new Star Wars book has just confirmed that isn't necessarily the case. In Star Wars Complete Locations New Edition, written by Jason Fry, Emily Shkoukani, Kristin Lund, Simon Beecroft, Kerrie Dougherty, and James Luceno, it explains:
"Jedi scholars disagree on the location of the Order's first temple, making cases for Coruscant, Jedha, and Ossus as well as worlds shrouded in myth, such as Tython and Ahch-To."
This completely flips the origin story of the Jedi on its head.
Pre-order Star Wars Complete Locations New Edition
With so little known about Dawn of the Jedi at this time, this change leaves the door wide open for the origin story of the Jedi, which is so much more exciting. Had this retcon not been included in Complete Locations, Dawn of the Jedi would have been restricted in terms of the story it could tell. Now, in light of this, the possibilities are really limitless—and especially exciting, given a centuries-old Coruscant could be shown.

Why Is Star Wars Backing Out Of Ahch-To As The First Jedi Temple?
The Possibilities Are Now Wide Open For This Jedi Origin Story

Dawn of the Jedi was already perfectly positioned to be a thrilling new addition to Star Wars movies and TV shows because it is essentially entirely unexplored territory in terms of what has been shown on screen in Star Wars canon. While knowing that the history of Ahch-To was likely to be front and center, it is so much more exciting to not know what exactly will be revealed about the Jedi in the movie. For my part, I would frankly be thrilled if Coruscant was explored as part of this origin story.
That could cause some continuity issues of its own, given the Coruscant Jedi Temple was actually built on a Sith shrine, but it would nevertheless be incredible to see more about that history shown on screen. Ultimately, Mangold's movie may end up confirming Ahch-To as the true location anyway, which would no doubt be fascinating as well. At least for now, though, this Star Wars: The Last Jedi retcon has left the door wide open for Star Wars' Jedi origin movie, and I couldn't be more excited.
Success!
