Gloria Elizabeth Reuben was born on the 9th June 1964, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, a daughter of Jamaican-born parents Cyril George, an engineer, and Pearl Avis Reuben, a classical singer. Gloria’s father died when she was a little girl, while her half-brother, Denis Simpson, a former actor and children’s television host, died in 2010. Reuben started learning piano as a young kid, and then studied music technique and theory, jazz and ballet at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. After appearing in a few television commercials, she decided to pursue a career in acting.
Career Beginnings and the early 90s
Gloria’s first on-screen credit came in 1987 in an episode of the Primetime Emmy Award-winning series “CBS Schoolbreak Special”, and the same year she also appeared in an episode of the Primetime Emmy Award-nominated show “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”. In 1989, Reuben played in her first feature film alongside Glenn Close, James Woods, Mary Stuart Masterson and Kevin Dillon in the drama “Immediate Family”, while from 1990 to 1991, she played Sabrina in five episodes of the Primetime Emmy Award-nominated show “The Flash”. Gloria Reuben is best known for her role of an HIV-positive physician assistant on the hospital’s staff, Jeanie Boulet, and although she was a guest star during the season one, thanks to her acting skills, Reuben became a full-time cast member in season two and played the role until season six, when she quit the series, having appeared in 103 episodes from 1995 to 2008, and received a Golden Globes Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television. She was also nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award in 1997 and 1998 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. In 2000, Reuben co-starred with Billy Zane in the thriller film called “Sole Survivor”, and from 2001 to 2002 played Lisa Fabrizzi in 23 episodes of the Primetime Emmy Award-nominated show “The Agency”. Gloria continued working on television, and appeared in four episodes of Dick Wolf’s Golden Globes Award-winning “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”, between 2002 and 2011. Between 2003 and 2004, Gloria appeared alongside Vivica A. Fox in 18 episodes of “Missing”, and in 2006 in the film “The Sentinel” starring Michael Douglas, Kiefer Sutherland and Kim Basinger. Gloria was busy in 2011 and 2012 as she filmed a couple of television films with Tom Selleck and Kathy Baker, playing the role of Thelma Gleffey in the crime/drama “Jesse Stone: Innocents Lost” (2011) and “Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt” (2012). Her biggest film project to date was in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-winning biography “Lincoln” (2012), starring Daniel Day-Lewis, while she appeared alongside Tina Fey and Paul Rudd in the romantic comedy “Admission” (2013).
